When we think of giving holiday gifts, items from our gardens don’t always come to mind. After all, during the months of November and December, most parts of the country experience cold weather that is unsuitable for gardening. However, it is possible to harvest flowers and greenery from our gardens during the warm summer months and preserve those items to give as gifts during the holiday season. In this article, we’ll explore a few ideas for creating treasured gifts from your garden that can be enjoyed long after the growing season has ended.

Obviously, if you want to give a gift of flowers after their prime growing season is over, you’ll have to find a good way of preserving the blooms. Drying flowers by hanging them upside down is one of the easiest ways to accomplish this. When learning to dry flowers, it will probably take some time and experimentation to get the best results. You’ll want to find a very dry and slightly warm place to hang them. A laundry room with a dryer can work well. Some flowers will respond better to drying than others. The goal is to remove the moisture from the flowers as quickly as possible, so that the blooms will still retain their color and shape as much as possible.

Gift ideas are almost endless when it comes to dried flowers. Making wreaths and other arrangements is a very popular idea; however, there are many other uses, as well. Consider covering a picture frame with small dried blossoms. You can then use the frame for a special photograph or memento, making a really unique and treasured gift for the recipient. Another idea is to fill a tall, clear cylindrical vase or jar with dried blooms, all of the same color. This is a great technique for making the flowers last their longest, because it will keep them from exposure to dust and humidity.

If you are lacking a good place to dry flowers, another preservation method is pressing. The basic principle behind pressing flowers is to gently spread the blooms out between two sheets of clean, absorbent paper and then apply pressure or weight for some period of time. One easy way to do this is to put the blooms in between the pages of a large, heavy book. The end result is a dried and pressed flower. This process can be sped up by applying silica gel or even microwaving the flower.

Pressed flowers can be made into almost limitless gifts. One quick and easy way to use them is to have them laminated between heavy sheets of clear plastic, and then cut the sheets of lamination into bookmarks. You could also add a poem, photograph, or paper initial in the lamination as well, for a special effect. Once the bookmark is cut out, punch a hole on top and tie a satin ribbon on it for a nice touch. Pressed flowers can also be used to decorate the top of gift boxes or bags, as well.

These are just a few ideas out of the many things you can do with dried or pressed flowers. For more ideas, get online or visit your library to check out some books on preserved floral crafts. You’ll discover that your imagination is the only limit when it comes to what you can do with these beautiful products of your garden.

Christmas is a season of gifts and sharing, and every family will have their own traditions and ideas, such as hanging decorations together, having a big family feast, and exchanging presents.
Although we sometimes hate to admit it, choosing presents can be a headache, especially if you have a large family and a tight budget.
MAKE YOUR OWN UNIQUE AND INEXPENSIVE HOMEMADE GIFTS THIS CHRISTMAS
If you are good in needlework, you can sew, knit or crochet small projects as Christmas gifts.
You can sew cute animal plush toys for children. They can double up as fridge magnets or pin cushions. Cute animals like a tortoise or food with faces are always hits with the kids and even adults.
Handmade throw pillows or knitted fleece blankets are excellent as gifts too. You can also knit scarves, mittens, and hats for everyone. They make practical gifts.
You can have the blankets or pillowcases embroidered with the recipients’ names to make them personalized. You can also let the children to pick their favorite cartoon fabrics as their pillow or cushion case.
PAPER CRAFTS
If you love paper crafts, you can make mini scrapbooks or altered journals. Mini scrapbooks are excellent as memory keepsakes. There are many samples available online that you can follow. Just make them according to the recipient’s favorite theme, add photos and sentiments on the pages, and that is it. This will be a very special gift and the recipient will surely appreciate your effort.
You can also compile poems and quotes for those who love collecting them. Altered journals are great for this purpose. Just print the poems and quotes, cut them nicely and stick them onto the journal pages. You can write your own messages too.
Another paper craft that you can make is personalized stationery. Print the stationery sets; add a nice writing pen and you have yourself a gift ready.
CONTAINERS MADE TO ORDER
Household items such as jars, bottles, tins and baskets can be made into beautiful Christmas gifts too. They can be altered, decorated with ribbons and other types of embellishments, and filled up with various items. Fill a nice tin can with homemade potpourri, while a jar can be decorated with ribbons and filled with goodies.
Be creative with the goodies, they can be anything from crafting materials such as buttons, brads, and ribbons, to delicious edibles such as candies. All these ideas can be personalized according to the recipients’ preferences.
You can fill baskets with goodies too, and they can be anything from food to perhaps sewing or other crafting materials. Make these gifts more personalized with photos and sayings.
MAKE A SPLASH WITH HANDMADE SKIN CARE AND BATH
For something adventurous, unique and wildly appreciated, you can make your own handmade skincare and bath items.
You can make bar soaps, shower gel, bath bombs, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, and even homemade cream masks. These items can be scented or non-scented. Use essential oils for the extra benefits.
While you are at it, why not make some scented candles, these are a natural with handmade bath items for a spa experience extra-ordinaire.
The ingredients used to make scented candles are similar to those used to make soaps. You can make a range of items with the same scent, pack them up nicely in reusable plastic jars and bottles, wrap them together in a basket, and you have got yourself a nice Christmas gift.
HOMEMADE CAN BE INEXPENSIVE, EASY AND MORE FUN THAN THE MALL
Homemade gifts are not difficult to make and they usually don’t cost much. All you need is your imagination and lots of effort.
Save some money this Christmas and make beautiful, thoughtful gifts for everyone.
You will be amazed how much your homemade gifts are appreciated.

Saving money at Christmas is on a lot of people’s minds by early fall. How do we make this time of celebration memorable without breaking the budget? With imagination, creativity, and thinking outside the box. You don’t have to go into debt to make the holidays fun ! Making it a homemade Christmas is one such way to spur new ideas in gift giving and decorating. With a bit of time, creativity in finding resources, and minimum to advanced skill levels, you can design homemade Christmas gift ideas and decor that will have friends and family in awe of your talents and all while saving money! Here’s a few ideas to get you going.Frugal Christmas decor ideas:-Use color. Look in discount stores (such as all-for-a-dollar) for red and green placemats, table runners and dish or hand towels. For minimal expense you can add holiday color to brighten your home.-If you live in an area where balsam and fir can be obtained; bring in a few sprigs and add to a colorful container. Add a couple inexpensive craft picks with artificial poinsettias, pine cones or other holiday decoration. Voila ! You have a table centerpiece.-Check out thrift stores such as Goodwill, the Salvation Army, or your local church thrift store for baskets, Christmas decorations, and other items that can be purchased for a fraction of what you’d pay new. Homemade Christmas gift ideas:-Think about the person you’re giving a gift to. What do they like? Is there something that you can make that’s related to their interest? For instance, many women love to pamper themselves. How about creating scented bath sea salts and adding them to a pretty jar ? Or, for the guys: think food. A dinner or dessert a month gift certificate would be well received. – Gifts of time are always a wonderful Christmas present. Think pet, house, or babysitting services. -Can you knit, sew, or woodwork? How can you incorporate those talents into gift giving this year?Other money saving Christmas tips:-Forego sending lots of holiday greeting cards and the postage costs that come with it. E-greetings sent online are cheap, can be personalized, and most people have a computer to receive them !-Make luminaries with candles, or spotlight a single outdoor Christmas tree or wreath, instead of taxing your city’s electrical grid (and adding to your light bill.) -Think of how much holiday food goes to waste in your home each year and taper back on all the goodies. Instead of baking 20 different types of Christmas cookies, limit yourself to 5. They will be enjoyed equally as well and you’ll have less work and expense !-As the host or hostess, have potluck gatherings instead of supplying all the food and beverages at parties. Most people have a favorite holiday recipe they love to share. Why not let them this year? There are so many more ways to stretch your Christmas dollars. It takes some creativity, but often the most simple of holidays is also the most memorable.

Every year during Christmas we decorate our Christmas tree with ornaments that we buy from store also with some really special ones that we make at home. The home made ornaments are basically made of our children’s photographs and brings back the lost memories each time we look at them. This not only makes our Christmas tree unique but gives it a personal touch and a door way to the lost happy days. If you would like to decorate your Christmas tree with photograph ornaments like we do here are some easy craft idea that you may pick up. The first holiday craft idea about the Christmas tree can even be done by a preschooler so you do not need to worry whether you have the necessary skill to pull it off. Take a 1/8 inch green sponge board and cut a three inch tree template. Now all you need to do is decorate this green tree ornament. You can make some brightly colored dots, even better if you allow your preschooler child to help you out. Once you are done coloring, cut a 1/2 inch hole towards the bottom of this green tree. Once done simply tape your photo or your children’s photo on the back of the tree so that it shows through the hole. You can add a red curling ribbon loop to the top of the tree to make it more attractive. One of my favorite Homemade Christmas ornaments that are made from photo are the felt bells that my son made me during his first year in Mother’s Day Out. His teacher skillfully cut a blue felt in the shame of a bell about three inches tall. A smaller while bell was also cut but this one has a small hole in the middle for the photo. The photo is attached to this while felt so as it shows through the hole. Once this is done you simply need to glue the white bell on top of the blue one. This will give the white bell a blue border all around. You can use a glitter glue pen to outline the edges of the white felt. Remember to punch a hole in the top of the bell and thread a blue ribbon to make a loop to hang the bell. Once this is done to complete the bell you will need to cut and blue a blue poster the same size and shape as the blue bell. Gluing it to the bell will actually stiffen the ornament. You can also attach a small jingle bell to the bottom of the ornament. The one my son had contained his name and year on the back, you can write yours.
